The Women's Trial Lawyers Caucus, Inc. was formed to fill a void evident in other bar associations - the lack of a forum specific to the woman litigator.
WTLC is an organization made up of civil practitioners, on both sides of the caption, engaged in diverse practice areas, including, but not limited to, commercial, corporate, matrimonial, municipal, medical malpractice, personal injury litigation and in public service. Our members include partners and associates at large, medium and small firms, as well as solo practitioners. What we have in common is that our members do not just sit in an office; we are in the Courts of New York State on a daily basis.
Our mission is to promote women in the legal profession, and more specifically, in the courtroom; to share our experiences and expertise and mentor, motivate and encourage women litigators; to encourage women to join the judiciary; to conduct screenings of judicial candidates; and to provide continuing legal education addressed to issues of concern to women lawyers and judges.
As an organization, we encourage, promote and assist women interested in joining the judiciary. In that regard, last year was an exciting year as we conducted two independent screenings of nominees for vacancies in the Court of Appeals, as well as participated in screenings of candidates for lower Courts. Again, this year, we anticipate another screening of Court of Appeals nominees.
We have also established a mentoring program designed to motivate, teach and encourage women lawyers. As a result of our diverse membership, the WTLC offers numerous, valuable opportunities to network and to develop the skills necessary for a successful career in the law. In addition, we provide opportunities to gain continuing legal education credits.
In these times, it is imperative that the WTLC remain vigilant with respect to equal rights, equal opportunity and equal pay for women, and to continue to promote diversity in the legal profession. Our association continues to flourish and will continue to do so into the future with your participation.
